Dynamic Pricing
Continuously repricing products in e-commerce or brick-and-mortar stores is a humongous task, but done correctly it can have a considerable impact on business profit. Dynamic pricing algorithms use machine learning but this use of predictive analytics is more involved than simply 'price prediction'. The presentation will discuss key elements of developing an optimal dynamic pricing algorithm and elucidate surprising algorithmic connections to other disconnected fields which seem far from optimal pricing, such as board games and traffic management.

Design Packaging For Your Physical Products - Online Commerce and Retail
It's so easy to let packaging be the last thing you think about in your product development and sales plan. Product development is a fast paced multivariable challenge - and sometimes it's a rush to pick what to put something in... and as a result it ends up all about cost on the penny and speed to market. But in reality product = packaging + stuff inside. They aren't 2 separate things, they influence and depend on each other. Great packaging SELLS a product by telling customers what it is and why it's valuable. Poor packaging execution can equal ZERO first time sales or ZERO repeat sales if the product doesn't arrive in one piece. What do you need to consider to successfully start selling online and on the shelf? Let's work through the key vocabulary, risks, budget issues and get you selling!

**IF YOU WISH TO HAVE YOUR PACKAGING ARTWORK EVALUATED DURING THE LAST 15 MIN OF THE CALL please plan to have product photos and packagign artwork available on your screen so you can share it during the presentation.**

Pitch Competition: Inventors and Investors
Sponsored by San Diego startup accelerator LogicBoost Labs

During San Diego Startup Month in October 2020, leading organizations will come together to host a new virtual pitch competition, “Inventors & Investors,” exposing innovative science-based startups to angel investors and VCs. The competition will be organized by Tech Coast Angels - San Diego (TCA), CONNECT and the San Diego Innovation Council (SDIC) with support from other corporate and nonprofit groups as a way to celebrate the startup spirit and resilience during challenging economic times.

For the prior 13 years, TCA has partnered with organizations such as the John G Watson Foundation, CONNECT and Cox Business to host the annual Quick Pitch competition at Qualcomm attracting more than 500 attendees each year. Although Quick Pitch is postponed for 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic, TCA and friends will be bringing much of the enthusiasm and resources to Startup Month with the same ultimate goal of Quick Pitch; investing in the best startups. Tech Coast Angels has invested over $4M into Quick Pitch finalists over the past 4 years alone including Echo Labs, Trust & Will, NeuraLace Medical, Lynx Bio, Eyedaptic and AgTools.

Since its inception in 2016, the SDIC has organized an annual Innovation Showcase, featuring high quality, investment ready, academic research-based startups from Southern California. The annual Innovation Showcase attracts 500 attendees from Southern California, Boston, the Bay area and abroad, including investors, large corporations, corporate and intellectual property attorneys. During the Showcase, the attendees and members of the SDIC, including TCA, local incubators, founders and others help the presenting startups advance their funding, collaboration and partnership goals. Similar to TCA and many other organizations, the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic has caused SDIC to postpone its traditional Innovation Showcase for 2020.

In recognition of our common goals and concerns, SDIC, CONNECT and TCA are pleased to announce that they are collaborating with each other to provide the community with this new landmark event as part of San Diego Startup Month that celebrates San Diego, our unique ecosystem for startup formation, support and success, and highlights the important role of research discoveries made by our San Diego academic institutions. It is with great pride that we present Inventors & Investors.

Date: Friday, October 9 2020
4 - 6 pm PST

Competition: 10 companies will be selected as finalists from a pool of startups curated by the SDIC. Each finalist will be assigned TCA coaches to help refine their elevator pitches that will be conducted before a panel of investor judges at the culminating event during Startup Month.

Prize: The 1st place winner selected by the judge panel will receive an automatic slot to pitch at one of TCA’s screening meetings in consideration for TCA funding. TCA invested over $12M into startups in 2019.

Open Source Rockstar Program
Open sourcing a project is step one in making an impact in the community. Follow it with an end-to-end program that highlights the value of your OS project so you can increase followers and contributors, which adds even more value to your solution. Learn about the “Open Source Rockstar” program, a holistic plan to connect with peers, increase contribution and “own” your piece of the OS community.

5 min - Intros
Open Source Demystified
  • 5 min - Demystifying Open Source, a detailed view of various ways to contribute to the community that are not necessarily code:
    • Do you like planning events?
    • Do you like to design?
    • Do you like to write?
    • Do you like organizing?
    • Do you like helping people?
    • Do you like helping others code?
    • You don’t just have to work on software projects!

  • 20 min- Design thinking immersion using D4D[2], (Design for Delight) methodology: Working in small teams of 2-3, tackle an opportunity with an “open source” mindset. Teams will be given a scenario to solve based on what they’ve learned so far.
    • What problem do you want to solve or what problem did you solve? Why is this important?
    • “Solutionstorming”: Brainstorm potential solutions and research what you can leverage or extend in open source. How will you solve the problem?
    • Draft your problem and solution statement.

Open Source Evangelism
  1. 15 min - Create an evangelism plan. Using a plan template, participants will set up a plan with best practices on how to get the OS community to check out and contribute to your open source project. Participants will use the following document to find users for their project: “F n F”, Find and Follow [3].
  2. 5 min - Establish a code of conduct [4] for your  community project .
  3. 10 min - Set yourself up to be an open source influencer:
  1. Ensure that the code in your open source project is robust. This includes ensuring that your code employs quality best practices by using tools for linting, security scanning, license vetting, etc.
Use available and free resources to create your project’s logo and establish your brand.
Create your “inner circle” within open source, such as establishing your trusted committers and support model.
Create a targeted communications plan - blogging, tweeting, presenting at meetups, etc.

OUTCOMES/CONCLUSION
Participants will take away the following:
  • Foundational knowledge in establishing robust open source projects.
  • The variety of contributions that are a great way to get involved with a project and meet other community members.
  • A well-thought-out open source project idea and ways to promote it.

Rational Design: As Little as Possible, but No Less
After 20 years of applying the design process to countless client situations, one pattern is clear: far too often we do far too much. Most clients don't need most of what we do, and I think it's time we require a rationale to include a step in the process rather than to skip a step. The tenets of UX design 'building empathy, understanding stakeholders, starting small, customizing solutions' should be applied to the design process itself. We call this approach Rational Design, and it saves our clients time, money, and frustration on the way to an informed, reliable, high-quality solution shrink-wrapped to fit each unique problem space.

Containers have been all of the rage for the past few years, but in 2020 they have become less of a "hot new tech" and more of an industry best practice. Software Residencies: Building Teams From Within
Internships and paid apprenticeship are a fantastic way to engage less-experienced developers. For many participants, they see it as a foot in the door. However, the problem is that most companies aren't set up to support those folks longterm. This starts a ball rolling down a questionable path from junior to mid-level to experienced ("senior") developers. Centuries ago, medical doctors were becoming an established trade with a similar problem. Lucky for them, they found a solution: residencies. In this presentation, we'll use an established model of thinking that combines structured learning, mentorship, and practical experience to address the junior-to-senior career path problem.

The Commoditization of Algorithms
As a manager in charge of building data science based products, it is a constant challenge to prioritize the right things to build versus buy in a resource constrained environment. No one has unlimited data science talent. So given this, it is critical to know new technologies and understand what is truly proprietary to your organization versus a commodity.Technologies like AutoML and the prevalence of well trained algorithms have made it easier than ever to find accurate models, yet companies are continually prioritizing their data scientists to build algorithms that have become commoditized. Combined with this with the fact that Gartner estimates that 87% of data science projects never make it into production, it is an incredible economic waste. In this talk, Daniel Huss will walk through the best practices of product management when prioritizing which algorithms to build internally, as well as hi-light the latest technologies that are making many algorithms a commodity.

Scaling Selenium: End-to-End Browser Testing for a Growing Team (That Actually Works)
End-to-end testing is a critical component of a comprehensive test suite for real production software. At the same time, true end-to-end tests require browser-based frameworks, which are notoriously flaky, slow, and expensive to run.Investing in E2E tests can supercharge the stability of your whole product. Fast and modular tests can be run at scale, so you can maintain a high degree of confidence in your releases even as your team grows. When tests are stable, they can be run automatically to prevent bugs before deployment (or even against each commit before merge!). In this talk, we will cover a range of technical investments that allow your team to run browser-based Selenium tests quickly and reliably. We'll go over frameworks that make Selenium tests easy to write and debug, and tools that let you run hundreds of simultaneous tests cheaply when making a commit. We'll also talk about how to break up your JavaScript code cleanly so that your organization can scale.

Story-Telling With a Point: Advance Your Career by Showing When You Tell
Would you expect to find a fork in a drawer labeled 'spoons, etc.'?
Maybe- you might not want to count on it!

We are all judged by how we introduce ourselves, and whether we are seeking a job or a chance for our company to offer products and services to a new customer, or when we rely on written materials to make that introduction for us.

In the routine flurry of 'LOL', 'RSVP', 'WYSIWYG' and 'WTF' (is there at least one you aren't sure about?) messaging of our daily exchanges with people who we already know are on the same page as us, it is easy to forget that these shortcuts undermine our ability to make important connections and nuanced points on what we want to say.

In this short session, you will get
  • Actionable Advice - The Best Kind of Advice: you can do something with it!  (If it isn't your style, it is at least a starting place to improve.)
  • Stories About Applying Storytelling - At Least it IS NOT "Death by Slides"
  • Recommendations You Can Use IMMEDIATELY - Get Something for your Efforts... Right Now
Looking for a "bonus" (or at least a silver lining to not meeting at an in-person event)?  Well, the format offers us a bonus that makes this talk...
EVEN BETTER!  Now that the event is virtual- at the end of the life session- you will get a chance to practice what you learned and get feedback, even before you get back to your day!

Missed the talk?  No worries!  Sign up to get the best from the talk in an Action Pack at http://www.skyshinedesign.com/sdsm2020-2

Directing Your Startup Team
The show must go on! That is as true in a startup as it is in the theatre. Before I transitioned my career into the startup world, I spent over a decade producing and directing in the entertainment industry. Little did I know that those years were only preparing me for what it meant to manage a truly collaborate and efficient startup team. In the entertainment industry, it is the director's job to make sure that everyone is doing their job under intense time pressure and collaboratively working across departments to cohesively tell the same story. What I found was the job of a tech startup CEO required the same coordination of departments, the same balancing of egos, and the same desire to empower every team member. This talk will walk through the skills needed to create such an organization and put a different perspective on managing a highly effective team.
