Rubén is the Associate Director of Licensing at the University of Southern California, one of the premier private research institutions in the United States. Rubén is an energetic worldwide innovation agent and has extensive experience transforming early research into attractive business opportunities. Rubén leads, develops and manages teams working on commercialization and partnering programs in diagnostics, therapeutics, artificial intelligence, materials and software, both in corporate and academic organizations. He is the co-founder, and current President of the San Diego Innovation Council, a coalition of academic and research institutes working together to highlight to the world the profile of the San Diego academic innovation ecosystem.

Rubén received his Ph.D. from UCLA’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He developed his career in biotechnology industry at BD Biosciences Pharmigen, Biosite (now Abbott), Chemicon (now Millipore-SIGMA) and GenWay Biotech. As Vice President for Business Development at Los Angeles BioMedical Research Institute (now The Lundquist Institute) Rubén managed all aspects of commercialization, including licenses, sponsored research agreements and spin-offs, pertaining to its intellectual property portfolio. At UC San Diego, Rubén was the Director of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, leading a team of 18 in the largest technology transfer office of the UC system, doubling the annual number of startups and increasing licenses by fifty percent. In his current role at the University of Southern California, Rubén oversees the completion of licensing agreements for software, electronics, telecommunications, energy, books, manuals, medical devices and materials.
